Warm up after sledding in tropical heat (until Dec. 31)

December 18, 2007

I won’t be giving away our favorite sledding hill in this post — and anyway, you’ve probably already found your own. If that happens to be Art Hill in Forest Park, have you stopped by the Jewel Box on your way home? It’s a perfect place to shed the wet gear and warm up. Well, it doesn’t serve hot chocolate, so it’s not quite perfect, but it has something else going for it instead: the coziness of a tropical rain forest.

Right now until Dec. 31, poinsettias are on display.  I don’t know much about horticulture, but I do know that it takes months of preparations to get poinsettias’ top leaves to turn those beautiful colors; they’re one facet of Christmas that really causes me to marvel because I could never replicate their magic on my own.  (I know this because I tried one year, with dismal results.)  The flowers and plants in the regular display are lovely on their own merits, of course, and it’s worth a visit anytime — but the poinsettias are extra special.

The Jewel Box has free admission Monday and Tuesday mornings, although it’ll be closed next Tuesday for Christmas.  No biggie if you miss the free window — admission otherwise is only a buck.  The Web site definitely doesn’t do it justice visually, although it does have more details about its hours and history.   For info you can also call 314.531.0080.
