Preschool groupies can pack a wallop (Apr. 5)

April 3, 2008

I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve seen Babaloo perform. You know, Babaloo — the singer-songwriter-guitarist whose concerts are full of dancing and drumming and whoopee cushions and jokes about dirty underwear? If you DON’T know Babaloo, it’s high time you checked out a show, and as it happens, there’s one at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Apr. 5) at the Museum of Transportation‘s plaza.

Our introduction to Babaloo came via his second CD, Room for Everyone, full of danceable songs about cutting the cheese and lawns that need mowing and toothbrushes that fall in the toilet. Upon seeing his picture, M. (then age 2) dubbed him “Crazy Guy,” and that nickname has stuck. And sometimes he is crazy, like the time last summer during a performance at Lafayette Park when he let kids from the audience come up and bang on his head with their drumsticks. (He does encourage kids not to bang on each other, at least not without permission.)

As of this week, Babaloo (aka Rob Compton) has a new Web site up, and while it’s not complete yet, I highly encourage you to check it out, and to watch for his name on events calendars throughout the coming months. I’m very curious if he’ll do a repeat of his library tour from last summer … say what you will, but even for adults there’s a thrill in attending a rockin’ concert in a library. Which reminds me that next Monday there’s a concert at the St. Louis Public Libary too, with one of my favorite blues bands, Phat NoiZ (see this post about the Not So Quiet Series for details).
