Summer camp in the city (from June 9)

June 4, 2008

Because we live in the city, we pay the 1 percent earnings tax every year.  And I’m always looking for ways to recoup my, er, investment.  Free mulch, firewood and playgrounds are the big three for us, but this year I’m checking into a new one:  free summer camps at the city’s recreation centers.  They start next Monday (June 9) and run for one-week sessions until July 25 at seven sites throughout the city.  The age range is 4 to 12, although different centers and camps may not serve that entire span.

The camps are more geared toward fun than education, with activities like face painting, arts and crafts, field trips, kickball, obstacle courses and fishing.  Lunch is provided at the full-day camps.

For details, as well as phone numbers for all seven locations, visit St. Louis Front Page’s online news brief, or call the city’s recreation division at 314.289.5320.  To sign up, visit the rec center you’d like to attend (you must go in person).  Some locations require pre-registration, some don’t; to be sure, call ahead.

While you’re at it, you might want to check into the city’s six free summer soccer camps that start July 7 for kids entering grades 2 through 8.  They’re taught by current high school and college players, with a ratio of one coach for every 10 or 12 players.  (That means spaces will probably go quickly.)  What’s nice is that these are classes in the fundamentals — a great idea for kids who may be latecomers to the sport and want to catch up with their peers already in soccer leagues.  And, hopefully, the classes will spawn some pick-up soccer games in the neighborhoods they’re serving!

They’re at six locations in city parks around the city, for two hours each day on five consecutive days.  The rec division can send you a sign-up form if you call the number above.  For details on dates and locations, see the city’s press release online.
