Cheap thrills on the ice (Fridays and Saturdays)

June 9, 2008

As hot as it was on Sunday, I felt no inclination to go outdoors. None at all. But I’d promised to take some houseguests (and M. and S.) to the ice arena in Brentwood to watch my husband’s adult-league hockey game that afternoon. I could hardly stand to touch our jackets and blankets as we loaded up the car, let alone imagine being cool enough to don them!

Then we walked into the rink, and it was sheer bliss. Temps in the 50s! Not a single member of our entourage complained about being cold the entire hour and a half we were there. And as we were leaving, I spotted a flier too good not to pass along: Cheap Skates on Fridays (7 to 8:30 p.m.) and Saturdays (1:30 to 3 p.m., except June 21 and 28 ) from now through August. Admission for residents and nonresidents alike is a mere $2. And if you have your own skates, you can even save the $1.50 rental fee.

After his game, my husband said the ice was soft and the puck kept bouncing off the players’ sticks … something we recreational skaters don’t have to worry about! For us, all that matters is being thoroughly chilled for an hour and a half for only $2. For details on the types/sizes of skates available for rent and other info about the Brentwood arena, see its homepage.
