Start bleeding blue, hockey fans (now through April)

October 4, 2008

A fellow school mom whose son is in skating lessons like M. reminded me the other day that it’s almost time for the Blues’ regular season to start (Oct. 10). That means the team’s practices — free and open to the public — are on again at the Mills Mall in Hazelwood. I admitted to having checked out the schedule online but having made it out there last year, so she gave me the insider scoop.

First, be sure to call ahead at 314.227.5288 and make sure the team will be practicing at the date and time you’re planning to go. Second, be friendly — the players tend to be relaxed and very willing to chat up 4-year-olds (even if the “chat” is entirely one-sided on the players’ part). Third, don’t be surprised if you get sucked into rooting for the team and buying more tickets than you would have before you got to know the players.

The hockey-playing parent in our household is pretty excited about this season because he’s a University of North Dakota fan, and their premier player from the past few seasons, T.J. Oshie, is in his rookie season with the Blues. He’s one of three new players that the Blues hope will cause a stir, especially with their defensive star Eric Johnson out for the season after getting his foot tangled in a golf cart during a pre-season team bonding outing.

The next practice is scheduled for tomorrow (Oct. 5) at 11 a.m.
