Boo at the Zoo (Oct. 17-30)

October 16, 2008

We spent a good chunk of Sunday afternoon in the splash jets at Tower Grove Park (yes, they were still going! On Oct. 12. Amazing.) It’s hard to wrap my mind around Halloween, even as the time approaches to start cutting jack-o-lanterns and get serious about the boys’ costumes. My friends’ kids are running around the neighborhood and the playground already, prompting me to muse on what’s up with Batman’s popularity this year?? I sincerely hope none of those little boys saw his latest movie, that’s for sure.

If you already have your kids’ costumes picked out, head on over to the Saint Louis Zoo tomorrow (Oct. 17) through Oct. 30 for Boo at the Zoo from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (The entrance point is the Z-O-O pylon, but don’t forget that the Hampton overpass is gone!) There is an admission charge for the event, but it includes fun — not scary, they’re quick to emphasize — displays, crafts and a show by Halloween Hank, who’ll be bringing out animals at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Prices are: $4/member; $5/non-member; free/children under age 2. There’s a $1 discount for children age 2 to 12 in costume, and parking is free (in the south lot only!). It’s a great opportunity to see nocturnal animals like meerkats, owls, naked mole rats and others.

Additional fees apply for the carousel and roller coaster simulator, both of which will be decked out for the Halloween holiday, and for the night hikes that begin at 6 p.m. Food and commemorative T-shirts are also available for purchase. To find out the details, check out the event homepage or call 314.646.4771.

And if you want to find out about more non-scary, Halloween-themed events and places, visit the special section at the Kids in St. Louis homepage.
