Warm up with a cozy book or hot glue gun (Nov. 8)

November 7, 2008

This is a good weekend to curl up with a new book … perhaps the latest from Lemony Snicket, the holiday tale The Lump of Coal, or his earlier A Series of Unfortunate Events. He’ll be signing books at the Daniel Boone Branch of the St. Louis County Library on Clarkson Road in Ballwin tomorrow (Nov. 8 ), but note that he’ll only do the first 300 buyers, and you must purchase copies of the book at the event in order to receive a line ticket for an autograph. Books go on sale at 9 a.m. for the 12 noon signing. For details, call 314.994.3300.

It’ll also be a good weekend to stay indoors and make holiday crafts.  We broke out the glue gun for Halloween, and now we can’t seem to stop ourselves!  First up [NOTE: If you’re a family member, please stop reading here so you don’t spoil the surprise!!] is a Christmas tree ornament workshop using old round wooden curtain hangers, ribbon, felt and snapshots of the boys. From there, who knows — we may take some tips from Craftzilla, the Glue Gun Goddess.  I guarantee you homemade is the way to go this year.  If the economic downturn isn’t reason enough, there’s also the cache of being able to make something cool out of old stuff (as this article from the Utne Reader explains).  Rumor has it folks are embarrassed to be seen leaving high-end stores with shopping bags, and even Internet stores are sending their  wares in unmarked packages to avoid the unusual stigma of being someone with money to burn.

If you’re not going to test your own trigger finger, mark your calendar for the Big A** Indie Art and Craft Show at Mad Art in Soulard on Dec. 5, 6 and 7.  You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing your gifts were hand-made and hand-purchased. It’s also a good year to check out church bazaars like the Hispanic one at La Tropicana in  South City tomorrow (Nov. 8 ) or at Christ Church Cathedral downtown on Dec. 7.
