Choo on over to Whittle (second Friday of the month)

November 10, 2008

With fall in the air and Christmas fast approaching, my thoughts have finally turned to our favorite indoor play venues for after-school and evening activities, some of which include:

  • the CooperElla cafe in Maplewood (go around 4 p.m. to avoid the crowds),
  • the City Museum downtown (which has added tons of activities this past year, indoors and out), and
  • the Magic House in Kirkwood (the new 25,000-square-foot expansion opens Dec. 20).

We’re also getting back to the schedule of freebie and low-cost family nights, like the one at Whittle Shortline Railroad on the second Friday of the month (Nov. 14). Admission is $4.50 for kids over 18 months (free for adults), which buys three hours of playtime, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., plus activities like face painting, cookie decorating and paint workshops. My kids aren’t big on the organized stuff; they prefer just to drive the trains around. They’ve not won me over to a train set at home yet, although if you choose to go that route, there are discounts on some purchases made during family night. For details, call 636.861.3334 or check out the shop’s homepage.
