Happy New Year fireworks (Dec. 31)

December 30, 2008

You’ll have many chances to ring in the new year with fireworks on Dec. 31, from the official First Night celebrations around the area to (perhaps) your next-door neighbors’ little blowout … but having partied with those pyrotechnically inclined next-door neighbors, and discovering that not everyone in the neighborhood appreciated their fireworks, I’m sticking with the sanctioned ones for this post!

The most widely publicized is, of course, First Night-St. Louis in Grand Center.  There’s a nicely done homepage for the event, and you can read all the details about admission prices and activities there; for my purposes, all you need to know is that there will be a fireworks display at 9 p.m., but it won’t hold a candle to the midnight extravaganza.  Naturally, if you set up camp just outside the Grand Boulevard main artery, you won’t have to pay to see the show (though it’s worth buying a ticket for the other 75-odd performances and attractions).

If First Night is a little more grandiose than you’re up for, check out the 6 p.m. fireworks at Westport Plaza Village, between Cold Stone Creamery and Casa Gallardo, in Maryland Heights. I’ve heard it’s a nice display for kids particularly because it’s early and not overly intense. There won’t be the 75 attractions, but there will be free carriage rides. For details, call 314.576.7100.

Either way, enjoy the night and I’ll catch you again in 2009!
