Mo Willems and his rats, bunnies, pigeon and more (Jan. 23)

January 11, 2009

Mo Willems is a big name in our house. His books about Knuffle Bunny and The Pigeon who wants so many outlandish things are usually part of our 7 p.m. bedtime routine. I think I’ll make an exception to the strict bedtime schedule on Jan. 23, when the author comes to the St. Louis County Library Headquarters (1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd., across from Plaza Frontenac) at 7 p.m. He’s promoting his new book, The Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed. Now, nake mole rats creep me out — no creature that pink and wrinkly should have such evil-looking teeth — but S. adores them. If he had his way when we went to the zoo, we’d spend the entire time watching them. But when Willems draws them, even naked mole rats start looking pretty cute.

I don’t usually promote events this far in advance, but in this case I wanted to make sure you get in on the chance to meet the author at an hour-long 5:30 p.m. reception that same day. Ten families will be drawn; you can enter at an county library branch between now and Friday (Jan. 16).  For details, check out the library’s flyer or call 314.994.3300.

In the meantime, in addition to reading the books a few more million times, my kids will be playing the games at Willems’ Pigeon Presents homepage.  They’re on the easy side for M. (age 5 1/2), but S. (age 2 1/2) is just learning to navigate a page with the mouse, and for him they’re about right.
