Take me somewhere warm! (Jan. 16)

January 15, 2009

At our school’s drop-off point this morning, parents were comparing tales of how their kids reacted to the finger-tingling cold snap — some shivered stoically, some practically cried (even in snowpants and parkas), and at least one seemed to take it as a personal affront. I, on the other hand, was basking in the ease with which S. let me put on his much-hated hat and mittens.

I joked about the weather for The Loop’s Ice Carnival in yesterday’s post, but if you’re not feeling like joking about the cold today, I don’t blame you. Instead, let me suggest that you take the kids to Third Degree Glass Factory, 5200 Delmar Blvd., for the Third Friday Open House tomorrow (Jan. 16). What better way to warm up than watching molten glass? Kids of all ages are welcome, as long as they can be constrained from running into the glassblower’s space during the demos.

The open house runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and includes limited samples of barbecue and unlimited bluegrass music. There’s a possibility of a fire performance too, weather permitting. And if your kids would like a souvenir, they can pay $20 to make a glass tile or pay $10 to have a wine bottle flattened (bring your own label-free bottle). The souvenirs can be picked up next week.

For details, visit the Third Degree homepage or call 314.367.4527.
