Random Acts of Kindness Week (Feb. 9-15)

February 6, 2009

The mid-1990s saw a big jump in nonprofits dedicated to kindness — not just in America, but around the globe, particularly in Asia. They’re still out there, but their profile has slipped little. It sounds cynical, I know, but there’s not much newsworthiness in kindness! That’s not to say I’m cynical about the goal. Indeed, I think we have many missed opportunities to do kindnesses every day — and to teach our kids that they can be kind too. So I’m promoting Random Acts of Kindness Week (Feb. 9-15) despite having very little to offer in the way of resources. Frankly, the Web sites I’ve seen (including the one set up by the privately funded Random Acts of Kindness Foundation) are not very well maintained. And perhaps that’s as it should be. As one site from Australia put it, “When carrying out acts of kindness, care should be taken not to intrude or embarrass — ‘discretion’ is the operative word.” And really, we all know how to be kind, we just don’t encourage ourselves to do it as often as we should!
