The Cat in the Hat finds a good place to play (Feb. 16 and anytime)

February 10, 2009

Yesterday we had one famous bow-tie wearer, Bill Nye The Science Guy. Today we have another, The Cat in the Hat. He’ll be at the Pottery Barn Kids store in The Galleria in Richmond Heights on Monday (Feb. 16) from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be a reading of Dr. Seuss classics, and then The Cat will pose for photos with kids. All of it’s free, and no tickets or advance reservations are required (for details, click here to view the online poster). If your kids have the day off school, as mine do, it’d make a nice little a.m. outing. Call 314.721.7338 if you have any questions.

The mom who passed along the tip mentioned that the Pottery Barn Kids store is a great place to play even when The Cat isn’t there.  The demo kitchen setup, for example is a favorite with her 1-year-old daughter.  If you can get your kids out of a toy store without major meltdowns, I also recommend browsing at the Once Upon a Toy store in Edwardsville or its sister store, LagoonaMagoo in O’Fallon, Ill.  There’s also a LagoonaMagoo outpost in St. Louis Mills Mall, and I haven’t visited it, but I know the others have a couple of sections for playing (train sets, kitchens, etc.) where kids can’t do much damage to the merchandise, and I expect the Mills Mall store is similar — at the very least, you have to love a place whose motto is “Home of the 35-cent cockroach.” For opening times and other info, check the local chain’s homepage.
