Art on a Sunday afternoon (Feb. 22)

February 19, 2009

Today’s tip is a double dose of art from two of my favorite Sunday afternoon freebie organizers: the Saint Louis Art Museum and COCA.

This month’s SLAM Family Program theme is Make a Good Impression, all about printmaking.  Each Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., kids can do activities related to the theme, and at 2:30 there’s a family museum tour.  Once a month, the museum hosts a local artist who works in the featured medium. This Sunday (Feb. 22), the staff of the very hip Cherokee Street letterpress and design shop The Firecracker Press will be on hand to demonstrate equipment and techniques.  You can read more about the activities at the SLAM Family Programs homepage — and be sure to mark next month’s Family Weekend on your calendar (March 28-29); it’s a two-day Chinese extravaganza coinciding with the new Ming dynasty exhibit.

Over at COCA, this month’s Free@Three Community Days event happens Sunday (Feb. 22) at 3 p.m. The theme is Let’s Get Moving and the featured artist is dance instructor Sarah McKenney, who’ll be teaching kids age 3 to 6 new moves and grooves.  You can register online or via e-mail (send your message to with Lets Get Moving Register in the subject line).
