An inspirational documentary on a Kenyan hero (Mar. 5)

March 4, 2009

Some of the movies in KETC Channel 9’s Community Cinema Series, intriguing as they all are, have subject matter that’s not appropriate for tweens or teens (gang wars, the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, etc.). The movie Thursday (March 5) is different. Taking Root, screening at 7 p.m. in the Missouri History Museum, is about Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, with whom I became familiar in January, after her tree-planting campaign was written up in M.’s Click magazine. (What can I say — I get my current events fix wherever I can!)

Maathai’s Green Belt Movement started out small in 1977, and at first it was just about trees.  Gradually, the empowerment it fostered in women led to their involvement in human rights and environmental issues — and even the downfall of a Kenyan dictatorship in 2002.  Two years later, Maathai won the Nobel Prize.
