Buzzing about butterflies (thru Mar. 31)

March 11, 2009

I’ll admit up front that I’m one of the few people in the region who has not yet visited the March Morpho Mania at the Butterfly House in Chesterfield. Judging by the number of blog hits generated on Google, MMM is the place to be this month. And I’ll admit it does sound cool — hundreds of bright blue morpho butterflies released Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Unfortunately, my boys got burned out on butterflies last summer! Hard to believe, especially when only a year ago M. was leaving white TicTacs on the steps as “butterfly food” because he was so desperate to attract them. Then we planted a butterfly garden. It was HUGELY successful, to the point that the boys pretty much ignored the lovely fluttering creatures by the end of the summer. I don’t foresee them suddenly becoming interested again before MMM ends on March 31.

But if you go, it sounds like it’s well worth the admission ($6 adults, $4 kids age 4 to 12, free for kids 3 and younger). It pays to arrive early, as admission to the Tropical Conservatory is first-come, first-served.

I’m impressed by the Butterfly House in general, even more so after I heard of its accreditation last fall by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (according to a Missouri Botanical Garden press release, it’s the only facility in the world dedicated to insects and arachnids to earn the honor).  Unfortunately, M. and S. are a hard sell this spring.  Maybe next year …
