A guided tour for kids at the Missouri Botanical Garden (third Saturday of the month)

March 20, 2009

Although the children’s garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden isn’t open yet (10 days to go and counting!), this Saturday (March 21) you can check out a new program geared for kids ages 6 to 12: Great Green Adventures. On the third Saturday of the month, the first 20 kids to sign up a the children’s garden ticket fort will get to go on an hour-long tour with educators, talking about sustainability, learning about nature and doing various hands-on activities and crafts.

There’s a $3 fee per person for each of the participants under age 12 (waived for members). As you may be aware, admission to the garden is free for city and county residents and their guests on Saturday mornings, so this guided tour is an especially good deal if you’re already in for no cost. Younger children are welcome to accompany older siblings; regardless of the children’s ages there must be one adult per every three children in your group.

The theme this month is “Siigns of Spring.”  The next few months feature “Ponds Come to Life” on May 16, “Getting to Know Trees” on June 20, “Discovering Missouri Natives” on July 18 and “Exploring the Chinese Garden” on Aug. 15.

Another fun possibility at the garden this weekend for the older kids is From the Garden, Live, an hour-long concert broadcast on KFUO, 99.1 FM. It takes place at noon in the Shoenberg Auditorium, and complimentary tickets can be picked up the week prior to the performance at the merchants and venues listed on the homepage.  The show on Sunday (March 22) features the Practicing Physicians (love that name!); other upcoming shows are March 29, April 5 and April 12.  The style of music varies from classical to jazz to unusual sounds like Klezmer music.
