Meet the Machines (Apr. 25)

April 21, 2009

M. is creeping toward that age where he’s going to “discover” vehicles. Kind of like that later age where boys “discover” girls! Already I’m getting tips on where to take him when that happens. For example: I did not know until very recently that the Hazelwood home of the Big Foot Monster Truck phenomenon is very much open to visits from truck-obsessed kids. Another discovery I made just yesterday is that alerting my brother to the existence of The Moto Museum might just be enough to lure a motorcycle-loving thirtysomething halfway across the country for a visit. Who knew?!?

I’m particularly ill-suited for the task of chaperoning a boy to anywhere the term horsepower gets tossed around, but I don’t think that will be a problem on Saturday (Apr. 25) at Meet the Machines. He’ll lose track of the fact that I’m even in the vicinity! The four-year-old event at the Budrovich Excavating and Contracting headquarters in an old quarry south of St. Louis is a dream come true for kids who love the rumble of heavy machinery.  Rather than warning kids to stay away, the construction workers at this boneyard are only too happy to let their guests (ages 3 to 15) climb and explore. You can read all the details in the online press release, but be aware that the first 1,500 kids to register at 10 a.m. receive hard hats and other goodies.  If you want them, go early — last year some 12,000 people attended. Meet the Machines runs until 3 p.m. at 10328 Lake Bluff Drive.
