Creve Coeur Days (May 14-17)

May 12, 2009

A few months ago I had the good fortune to be assigned to interview local musician Javier Mendoza. We’ve been fans of his for ages; M. loved seeing him play a set barefoot in Lafayette Park’s outdoor concert series a couple of years ago. Mendoza, who grew up in Spain, writes pop rock and ballads in both English and Spanish, but his new side gig is Sunmotel, a band that’s all about loud, brash rock ‘n roll. And my kids like that too, so I anticipate his show at Creve Coeur Days on Saturday evening will be a lot of fun.

The festival, at a new location this year (the very spacious grounds of the BJC West Hospital), runs four days, Thursday to Sunday (May 14 to 17). The weekday hours are in the evenings only, but it’s worth the late bedtime on a school night because you can get deals like unlimited rides Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. for only $14.  On the weekend, it’s an all-day extravaganza, including kids’ activities (and free pony rides from 3 to 5 p.m.) and a parade on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mendoza said he keeps his shoes on most of the time now — the new look he’s going for, in the Sunmotel style of over-the-top hard rock, involves a tight red suit. I wonder how impressed M. will be with ’80s hair?
