Music all around Benton Park (June 13)

June 12, 2009

This is the first Saturday in a long time when all my commitments are within walking distance of the house — and after driving to West County every day this week for Spanish Camp, I’m looking forward to a reprieve from traffic. Even the allure of the farmers’ market probably won’t tempt me to get behind the wheel!

Instead, I’ll be sitting around with neighbors most of the day at various private and public events. The day’s highlight will be the Benton Park Blues Concert tomorrow (June 13) from 4 to 7 p.m. The Bottoms Up Blues Gang performs, and in anticipation of the event, the local playgroup has organized a musical parade from a new art gallery, Abstrakt, at the corner of Lemp and Arsenal, down to the park. Meet at 3:30 p.m. to parade along.

A few blocks to the south, the year-old Saxquest store and museum is celebrating with a live performance by the Oasis Saxophone Quartet and a competition for local high-school clarinet and sax players (the prize is either a new $3,000 instrument or a $1,000 scholarship). It’s too late to register for the contest, but you can come out and hear the musicians for free. Call 314.664.1234 for times.
