Indoor and outdoor concert series this week (June 17 and 18)

June 16, 2009

It’s going to start really feeling like summer here in about an hour, once the sun’s fully out, and I’m already debating whether I’ll make it to an outdoor concert as planned on Thursday. Don’t know if I can face a triple-digit heat index! But there’s a free indoor option that I might choose instead: The Tower Grove Park’s Children’s Concert Series starts tomorrow (June 17) at 9:30 a.m. in the Piper Palm House with classical music organized around the theme “Where in the world is the music?” Concerts happen weekly through mid-August.  Plan to arrive in plenty of time to get a seat (the floor can be used in a pinch, but it’s not particularly comfortable for an hour-long concert!) and plan to stay afterward to take advantage of the wading pool across the circle, which finally opened over the weekend.

If the heat doesn’t scare you, head up to St. Louis Place Park on Thursday (June 18) for the first in the Grace Hill’s Whitaker Urban Evening Series. The six-week series starts with Renee Smith, aka “Queen of St. Louis Soul,” and includes reggae, jazz, blues and rock artists.  During the 7-9 p.m. concert, there’s an art station and a variety of other entertainment for kids who can’t sit still.  Then again, with music like this surrounding them, they shouldn’t have to!
