Free MoBot admission and then some (July 24)

July 21, 2009

The cool weather this summer has me smiling all day long, but many of my sun-worshipping friends are cursing it. And I’m sure waterpark owners aren’t any too happy either. I tend to want to hibernate when the temp gets above 90F, so we’ve been out and about more this summer than ever before. It helps, too, that S. is old enough to go for long stretches with a fairly short afternoon nap.

We’ve been exploring lots of new places, which is fun, but we’ve also been neglecting our old favorites a little. Friday there’s an incentive for us to remedy that at one venue, the Missouri Botanical Garden, which is letting everyone in for free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To both the garden itself AND the Children’s Garden. The entertainment schedule is an extra bonus: For example, Bob Kramer’s marionettes will perform for free at 11 a.m., 12:30 and 2 p.m. on the plaza southeast of the Ridgway Visitors Center. (The shows would usually set you back about $15 a person; if you’re curious for more info on attending a show in the Central West End theater, you’ll have to call 314.531.3331 because the homepage http://www.kramersmarionnettes.com is offline today.)

There’s other entertainment too — jugglers and stiltwalkers, music and children’s games, actors in period Victorian costumes and someone handing out cookies (while supplies last). The freebies are in honor of Henry Shaw’s 209th birthday. There’s a big Chuck Berry concert that night, too, but all us free-entrance folks will have to leave before that starts; tickets to the concert are $60 each for the general public. For more info on these events and others, visit the garden’s online calendar.
